The Importance of Scripture in Religious Traditions

All religious traditions that ground themselves in texts must grapple with certain questions. What is the nature of these texts? How are they interpreted? What authority do they have? "Scripture" refers to the revered texts of a religion, and it comprises a significant portion of the world's literature.

The Meaning of Scripture in Different Religions

In the Bible, "Scripture" primarily refers to the Christian canon, which includes the Old Testament and New Testament. In Judaism, the Torah, or the first five books of the Hebrew Bible, holds supreme importance. Islam considers the Quran to be the final revelation from God and the most reliable source of guidance. Hinduism has a vast collection of religious texts known as the Vedas and Upanishads, which contain philosophical teachings and sacred hymns. Buddhism relies on the Tripitaka, a collection of teachings attributed to the Buddha.
